What is a student visa in Spain?

The long-stay student visa allows non-EU citizens to legally enter and reside in Spain to pursue educational, training, or volunteer activities for more than 90 days. This visa also includes authorization to stay for the corresponding period.

It applies to those who are going to carry out any of these activities:

Requirements to apply for a student visa in Spain

  • Official form completed and signed.
  • Valid passport for at least one year.
  • Authorization to stay for studies previously granted by the immigration office (except in exceptional cases).
  • Payment of the visa fee .

  • Not be in an irregular situation in Spanish territory.

  • Minimum age according to the type of activity:

    • Higher education: minimum 17 years.

    • Secondary and training: minimum 18 years.

    • Mobility: age that allows for pursuing studies according to educational regulations.

    • Volunteering: minimum age required by the corresponding law.

  • Parental authorization if the applicant is a minor and is in the care of a third party.
  • Sufficient financial resources:

    • For the student: 100% of the monthly IPREM (not including the amount used to pay for the course).

    • For accompanying family members: 75% of the IPREM for the first person and 50% for each additional person.

  • Private or public health insurance valid in Spain, with benefits similar to those of the national health system.
  • Criminal record (if the stay exceeds 6 months and the applicant is of criminal age).
  • Not listed as rejectable in the Schengen area or in countries with an agreement with Spain.
  • Medical certificate who proves that he or she does not suffer from any diseases that have serious repercussions for public health.
