Extension of studies in Spain

If you are already studying in Spain with a student visa or study permit and need to extend your stay to complete your studies or continue a new academic program, you can request an extension.
What is a study extension?
The extension of stay for studies is a administrative authorization which allows foreign students extend your legal stay in Spain beyond the initial authorized period, provided that they continue to meet the legal requirements.
Who can apply for an extension of their studies?
Foreigners who have an authorization or visa granted for one of the following reasons:
- Full-time higher education studies at a recognized higher education institution or center in Spain (up to two extensions per authorization).
- Completion of post-compulsory secondary education studies at an authorized center (up to two extensions per authorization).
- Providing volunteer service in a non-profit program (only one extension per authorization).
- Carrying out training activities (only one extension per authorization).
- Holders of student mobility stays cannot request an extension.
Requirements to request an extension of studies
Valid passport or travel document, recognized as valid in Spain, with a minimum validity of one year.
Have sufficient financial resources to cover living expenses and the cost of returning to the country without resorting to the social assistance system.
Have health insurance, arranged with an insurance company authorized to operate in Spain.
Be pursuing full-time higher education, post-compulsory secondary education, volunteer service, or training activities.
Verification of the absence of a criminal record in Spain and evaluation of the corresponding police report.
- In the case of teaching Spanish language studies or co-official languages in Spain, the applicant will be required to have passed the course in which they were enrolled in the Official Language Schools or, in other cases, to have obtained one of the diplomas of Spanish as a foreign language (DELE).
- In the case of preparatory courses for the selection tests for access to specialized healthcare training positions, the applicant will be required to provide proof of having taken the tests.
