What is happening in Türkiye?

The first of them is him end of the Cold War, an event that made possible its disconnection from the Soviet Union. Because of this he began to worry on the one hand, of the adhesion to the European Union and on the other, unwavering support for the Turkish Cypriot government.

The first issue continues to be of vital importance for the current Turkish government, although we must also consider that the relationship with the European Union has been deteriorating in recent years and the acclaimed accession process.

Consequently, the end of the Cold War and the move away from the dream of the European Union have considerably changed the Turkish foreign policy.

Along with this, notable changes have occurred within the country itself.

We can highlight the growing Islamization due to the various consecutive electoral victories of the Justice and Development Party in legislative elections; as well as for the own response that the government has given to criticism of its growing authoritarianism, and for him failed coup d'état that occurred in 2016.

The response to it has been slow but gradual: expulsion from the different structures of the State of soldiers, teachers and other professional bodies associated with the coup according to the point of view of the Government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The conjunction of all these changes has led Türkiye to turn towards two regions which in the past had not deserved much attention on their part: Middle East and Africa.

Thus, under Erdogan's mandate, The country has become a key actor in the changes that are taking place in its regional environment.

As an example, his role in the current Syrian war, a key element to understand what Türkiye pursues in its foreign policy.

Likewise, it highlights the support provided to opponents of the Bashar Al-Assad regime, several of them extremists, with the aim of overthrowing him.

Just as the fight against the Kurdish militias in Syria, allied to the US, continues, which are located in northern Syria in order to avoid a region governed by Kurds who would cooperate with the Kurdish separatist movement in Turkey.

This confrontation has led him to have a historical tension with the United States and has come to question its position within the NATO.
